Evaluation & Diagnosis
Based on the patient’s condition the treatment plans are determined. Treatment options may be necessary due to various factors involved with each case. Treatment plans are customized to take into consideration each individual’s situation, and typically the specialist will provide the patient with options for a particular treatment.
Treatment of Gum Disease
The cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, which needs to be removed from the areas below the gum. There are many forms of treatment for gum disease. Periodontal therapy eliminates hard deposits (tarter) that have formed on the roots and teeth to allow healing to occur. Treatment plans have many purposes. Primarily, to reduce the depth of the deep pockets, which give patients the ability – via home care – to prevent the accumulation of bacteria.
Dental Implant Therapy
Patient’s who have missing, decayed, or fractured teeth can have them replaced with dental implants. Ideally, the implant is placed at the same time the tooth is extracted. If the tooth has already been extracted an evaluation needs to be made to ensure sufficient bone is present for the implant to be placed. Required treatment plans include a bone graft that may be required to rebuild the lost bone. Implants can replace single or multiple teeth, or an entire upper or lower jaw.
Temporomandibular Joint Therapy
TM joint disorders may occur within the joint itself and/or affect the muscles and soft tissue structures around the joint. Treatment plans include muscular therapy that involves the application of heat and stretching exercises. Appliances can be used to help minimize the spasm of the muscles that open and close the jaw. This often alleviates the pain associated with TM Joint disorders.
Oral Appliance Therapy
Appliance therapy is a custom designed mouth guard that is used as a diagnostic tool, or for the treatment of disorders associated with the jaw. These appliances are treatment plans that eliminate the individuals ability to clench and grind their teeth. This can also relieve any clicking or popping of the joint. These devices can also assist with locking of the jaw and limited opening. Different appliances are made depending on the specific condition.
A periodic maintenance program is required after periodontal therapy. This time period varies between two and six months depending on the severity of the individual’s case. At that visit the hygienist evaluates the mouth, and cleans the teeth both above and below the gum-line. These treatment plans eliminates the bacteria which is the cause of periodontitis.
Adults may require tooth movement to improve their smile or bite. This particular service is called Adult Orthodontics, which realigns the crowded teeth and closes any space between them. Treatment plans are assessed prior to determining adult orthodontics as the best option. Adult orthodontics are also necessary to upright the back teeth when they have collapsed.
Impacted Tooth Exposure
The majority of teeth erupt naturally into the mouth, but sometimes they become impacted due insufficient space within the jaw bone. Treatment plans are put together to identify the severity of the impacted tooth. The impacted tooth that is embedded under the gum or jaw bone needs to be surgically exposed. This provides access for the orthodontist to adhere a bracket onto the tooth, and position the tooth into the arch.
